Baby Girl Names

(Inspired by my favorite TV shows)

My sister in law’s due date is tomorrow. She’s basically sitting at home, waiting to pop. Her mother’s birthday is tomorrow, but her husband doesn’t want to her to go to a restaurant to celebrate in case ‘the baby comes out’. Because men are like that. So she’s brainstorming about baby names and it got me thinking about my favorite baby names.

If you’re sitting on the couch right now waiting for your baby to come and you’re stressing about names, I hope these will help you. OR at least give you something to watch in the end to distract you from the fact you have to pee. Again. Whoops sorry!

Keep in mind, I only like the names, not necessarily the characters :)

And these series are all a bit older, because I really don't have time to try out new series at the moment with an adorable two year old running around that's interesting in doing anything but sleeping! Haha! Even though these are older, I still think they're really worth watching.

  1. Marina - Inspired by the Magicians.

The original meaning is from Latin and it means 'From the sea'

The Magicians

Based on the book by Lev Grossman, this is the only tv show I like more than the book (sorry Lev) It is truly incredible, it's like Narnia for grown ups. If you like fantasy, I beg you, give this a go. AND tell me if you enjoyed it!

  1. Yalena – Inspired by Killjoys

The name has its origin in Ancient Greece, it can mean 'Torch' 'Brilliant' or 'Shining Light'

Killjoys

Killjoys is about two bounty hunters that are best friends, trying to make ends meet, battle their personal issues and kick some ass.

One of the only series that I've ever watched that has a platonic male and female lead. Awesome!

It made me realise Canadians make really good series!

  1. Sophie-Anne – Inspired by True Blood

French origins, Anne means Grace and Sophie means Wisdom. A beautiful name and a beautiful meaning.

True Blood
True Blood takes place in a fictional world were vampires just 'came out of the coffin'. Its heroine is Sookie, who is a barmaid in a small Southern town called Bon Temps. Her life is changed forever when one night 'Bill' walks into her bar. Lots of sex, violence and swearing, it's a blast really, I've rewatched this one a couple of times.

  1. Victoria – Inspired by Victoria

Victoria is the female version of Victor which means victorious. A strong, yet timelessly elegant name.

Victoria
This was an unexpected series for me. It's not a series I would usually go for, but I'd chanced upon it. The actors are phenomenal and the costumes are truly a treat for the eye. Even if costume dramas aren't usually your thing I would give this one a try.

  1. Raven - Inspired by the 100

Named after the bird, the name Raven often is associated with intelligence, mystery and magic.

Bridgerton
This series is a little bit of a mixed bag for me. I would file it under 'Guilty Pleasures' except that I don't believe in feeling guilty for things that give me pleasure ;). I especially enjoyed the aesthetic of the series. As you can already see in the picture on the left, the colours are incredibly bright and incredibly well coordinated. It is a true feast for the eye. I also absolutely love the music choice: brilliant. It often features modern songs like Billie Eilish's 'Bad Boy', performed by a traditional String Quartet. (I think this skyrocketed the Vitamin String Quartet to success) You can check out the official playlist here

  1. Penelope - Inspired by Bridgerton

Origins of this name are a bit hazy but some give the meaning 'weaver' to this name. This meaning is derived from 'Penelope' the wife of Odysseus in Homer's the Oddysey. Penelope kept her many suitors at bay with the crafty excuse of weaving a death shroud for her husband while he was away. Of course in this cunning and romantic display of fidelity it always feels like she should have left Odysseus who was anything but faithful on his ten year long travels...

The 100

The first episode starts on a space ship set almost a hundred years after the Earth was destroyed by a nuclear war. On the ship resources are getting tight and that's why any tiny infraction, any toe out of line will 'get you floated'. AKA they will just eject you into space. The story really kicks off when they send 100 juvenile prisoners (the 100) back to earth to check to see if it's already inhabitable. They soon discover that they're not alone....

I really enjoyed the first few seasons of this show. I really enjoyed the story line and the characters.

  1. Lexa - Also inspired by the 100

Lexa is a short form of Alexandra and has a Greek origin, meaning "defending men." Now I don't think you should take it literally as in only defending men, but more as a defender of mankind aka people in general. I've always found it to be a strong name.

  1. Faye - Inspired by the Secret Circle

Comes from the Middle English word fair which means fairy. Alternative ways of spelling the name are Fay or Fae.

The Secret Circle

A charming youthful show about a young girl that comes to a new town after her mother dies mysteriously. She discovers that she's a witch and that she is in danger. She tries to fix things with her friends but only makes things worse and worse and things get more dangerous by the minute. A word of warning, this series only had one season, so if that puts you off, don't start this one.

  1. Diana- Also inspired by the Secret Circle

Meaning:Divine, heavenly, goddess. In mythology, Diana was an ancient goddess in Roman mythology. Noted for her beauty and fleetness, Diana is often depicted as a huntress. I always associate the name with a strong girl who can stand up for herself and kick some ass if necessary.

  1. Yasmine- Inspired by the Nine Lives Of Chloe King

Yasmine is a delicate white flower. The word comes from yâsamin which means gift from God.

The Nine Lives Of Chloe King

A fun youthful series about a girl who discovers she has 'powers' on her 16th birthday. A fun cast, interesting world building and a steamy love triangle, this series was great to watch. The only drawback? It wasn't renewed for a second season so don't start if you hate that.

I hope that these names will help you and inspire in your search for the right name for your baby. Don't stress out too much to choose the perfect name. I always thought that I would 'know' when I found the perfect name and felt really stressed when no names clicked for me and felt like 'the one'. In the end I went with a name I found beautiful and I've never regretted it. I feel happy every day with my choice and I feel like the name does match my child, she just grew into it.

It's so difficult to feel like you have to choose the right name for someone you haven't even met, so don't worry, relax and don't put too much pressure on it.
