The Search for Better Sleep
It’s been almost two years since our little one arrived, and let me tell you, sleep has been a rollercoaster ride. I can’t even count how many late-night moments I’ve spent frantically googling ‘newborn music sleep’ or ‘infant music to sleep.’ You know those sleepless nights when you’re willing to try anything—white noise, rocking, lullabies for newborns—just to get a few precious hours of rest?
Discovering the Power of Music for Newborn Sleep
In one of those middle-of-the-night searches, I came across several articles about the benefits of playing relaxing music for newborns. For example; Sleep Medicine (2019) showed how calming music before bedtime can help infants fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. The study explained that gentle, rhythmic sounds—think lullabies or soft instrumental music—can help regulate a baby’s heart rate and breathing, making it easier for them to drift off to sleep. It seemed incredible that music can actually physically influence a newborn baby. Being a bit of a sceptic, it took me several weeks to actually put the theory to the test...
Our Experience with Infant Music
Finally desperate enough, I started googling sleep music for infants and I started playing these soothing melodies during our bedtime routine—mostly gentle piano music and classic lullabies for newborns. To my surprise, it made a difference. Our evenings became less stressful, and while it didn’t solve every sleep issue overnight, it definitely helped my little one relax. No more bouncing on a birthing ball for hours (though I must say, it was a great workout).
Why Music Works
A study from Developmental Psychology(2020) shows one of the important reasons why music works so well for infant sleep. The study focuses on how relaxing music for newborns can lower stress levels in both babies and parents. The researchers measured cortisol levels—a key stress hormone—and found that infants exposed to calming music had significantly lower levels compared to those who weren’t. It makes sense: When I put on relaxing music after a long day, I can feel my muscles relaxing. So why wouldn't it be the same thing for babies? Perhaps music helps them calm down and let go of the busy activities of the day. After all, the world must seem like an overwhelming place for a newborn.
Additional Benefits of Music
Research in Early Child Development and Care (2023) discovered that playing music for newborns can stimulate auditory development and improve sensory processing. This means that not only does music help babies sleep, it also can contribute to their overall cognitive development during those crucial early months. The same study also noted that consistent use of music at bedtime helps establish a predictable sleep routine for infants, which is essential for regulating their circadian rhythm.
Bedtime Routines
That's something that we've definitely experienced, the need for a bedroutine that's exactly the same. From the moment we put on those soothing lullabies it signals that it's time for sleep. And while before our little one would fight bedtime tooth and nail, it's now become a gentle acceptance.
Though I would add one very important thing. Find a bedtime that suits your child(a whole other story for another time). Generally I've read a lot of advice that the 'ideal' bedtime for a baby is around 7pm. And while that might work for a lot of people, baby's sleep-needs are as versatile as people's sleep-needs. If you have the feeling your baby thrives on an earlier or a much later bedtime: go with your instincts! No soothing music or great bedtime routines can put your baby to sleep if they're not tired enough.
